Buffs fall to Montreat at home

Milligan drops to 5-19 (4-17 AAC) on the year while Montreat adds on to their win total with a 16-7 (14-6 AAC) record for the 2022 season.
Montreat built an early lead of nine points (14-5) over the first four minutes of the first half behind three consecutive three-pointers. With just under two minutes to play until halftime, Finn McClure knocked down a triple to trim the Cavalier lead to just two points (28-26). Montreat closed out the final two minutes scoring the last four points to carry a six point lead (32-26) into the break.
Milligan won the rebounding battle through the first 20 minutes of play 21-19. The Buffs also got a big lift off the bench in the first half as they accounted for 15 of its 26 points. McClure scored 11 points on three-of-six shooting from the field and knocked down one three-pointer. Sami Sanad added seven points, made one three-pointer, and grabbed five boards.
Montreat opened the second half on a 12-2 run through the first five minutes of play to extend its lead to 16 (44-28). After trading baskets for the majority of the next 13 minutes, Sanad scored six-straight points, the second being a four-point play, to cut the Cavalier lead down to single digits (68-60) with just over a minute to go in regulation. After Montreat converted on two free-throw attempts, McClure cashed in on a corner three, cutting the deficit to seven points (70-63). Unfortunately for the Buffs, they were unable to convert on their last possession and came away with a 71-63 loss.
Sanad led Milligan in both points and rebounds scoring 20, knocking down three-of-six from behind the arc, and grabbing a team-high eight boards. Knox finished just behind Sanad with 19 points on nine-of-17 from the field and pulled down seven rebounds. McClure added 15 points on four-of-ten from the field and made two three-pointers.
The Buffs were outrebounded by a margin of 12 in the second half; losing the battle on the glass 47-37 for the game. Milligan struggled shooting the ball in the contest finishing at just 34 percent from the field on 22 made baskets and 19 percent from behind the arc on six three-point makes. The tough shooting day continued for the Buffs from the charity stripe as they shot just 65 percent.
Milligan will return to the court tomorrow afternoon at 4:00 p.m. making up a matchup with St. Andrews that was originally scheduled to be played on January 15th.
