MILLIGAN, Tenn. (March 16, 2022) – The Milligan University flag football team notched its first win of the season as the Buffs split an afternoon doubleheader against Cottey on Wednesday afternoon at Anglin Field. The Buffs triumphed 7-6 in the opening game and fell 26-12 in game two.
Both squads moved to 1-5 on the season.
"It was great to have our first home game on campus," said interim head coach Lauren Gullett. "I appreciate the crowd that came out to cheer us on and walk away with our first W of the season. We hope to build on it for nationals."
The Buffs' lone touchdown in game one was a 34-yard touchdown strike from Brooke Housley down the right sideline to Mya Eury in the first quarter. A successful one-point conversion gave Milligan an early 7-0 edge.
Cottey scored its lone touchdown in the second quarter, but was unsuccessful on its PAT. Milligan clung to its 7-6 lead at halftime and after the third quarter. Late in the fourth, Cottey drove down inside Milligan's 20 yard-line and had fourth goal-to-go opportunities. From fourth and goal from inside the Milligan five, Blakelee Ollis chased down the Comets' quarterback to end the drive with a sack and turnover on downs. The Buffs were able to hold on for their first win of the season.
In game two, Housley connected with Bethany Stephens and Liz Burns for touchdowns. However the Comets had four scoring plays, several of which were over 40 yards.
In the fourth quarter, the Buffs trailed 19-12 and forced Cottey into a fourth down situation right outside the Milligan 20. The Comets scored on their fourth down play to push their advantage to a two-score edge and held off the Buffs to earn their first win of the year.
Milligan returns to action on April 1 when the Buffs travel to Kanas to take on St. Mary's and Kansas Wesleyan.
