Cycling captures Men’s Team Time Trial national championship on opening day of road nationals

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (May 5, 2023) – The Milligan University cycling team quartet of Trevor August, Ethan Craine, Adin Papell and Artem Shmidt won a national title in the Men's Team Time Trial on the first day of USA Cycling's Collegiate Road National Championships in Albuquerque on Friday.

The Buffs' men navigated the 18.7-mile team time trial course in 35:31.79 to win the national championship by over 42 seconds over runner-up Marian to secure Milligan's second all-time men's cycling national championship and 31st event national title in Milligan University history. The Buffs had previously won women's team time trial titles in 2016 and 2022.

In addition to the national title in the Men's Team Time Trial, the Buffs totaled four other podium showings on Friday.

Milligan opened the national championship weekend with a third-place showing in the Women's Team Time Trial. The Buffs' unit of Madeline Bemis, Marjie Bemis, Megan Jastrab and Makayla MacPherson completed the course in 42:14.03.

William Seitz rode to a national runner-up finish in the Men's Individual Time Trial in28:35.72. Will Owen joined him on the ITT podium with a fifth-place finish in 29:52.06. Asa Holliday placed 11th and Ethan Sanchez was 13th to round out Milligan's men in the ITT.

Mallory Bryan secured a spot on the podium in the Women's Individual Time Trial as she placed fourth in 36:57.25.

In the Team Omnium standings, Milligan sits in first place with 146 points. Fort Lewis is in second place with 142 points after winning the women's TTT and finishing fourth in the men's TTT. The Team Omnium standings are determined by each team's performance in the men's and women's time trials, road race and criterium.

The national championships continue tomorrow with the men's and women's Road Race.
