Geren’s Gem Fuels (RV) Milligan Baseball’s Shutout of Bryan
MILLIGAN, Tenn. — On Friday afternoon, the (RV) Milligan University baseball squad rode a sterling pitching performance to a 5-0 shutout win over the Bryan College Lions on Anglin Field, opening up their Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) three-game weekend series.
After two-and-a-half scoreless frames, the Buffs notched the game's first runs in the bottom of the third. Four Bryan errors in the third inning alone led to two unearned runs, as Cade Kalehuawehe brought home Bryce Burkey on a throwing error. A RBI groundout by Bryce Safferwich then brought home Reagan Smith, making it 2-0.
Burkey chopped an RBI double over the first baseman's head down the right-field line to score Braxton Baird in the bottom of the fourth to make it 3-0.
The last two Buffs' runs came via solo homers by Safferwich in the fifth and Kalehuawehe in the sixth, clinching their 5-0 shutout triumph.
Milligan had nine hits in the victory, with Safferwich, Baird and Angel Lobo each tallying two hits. Safferwich and Smith each had a stolen base in the win, as well.
Buffaloes' starting pitcher Canyon Geren hurled seven innings in the win, allowing just four hits without a walk. He tallied 11 strikeouts in his third victory of the campaign. He was relieved by Jacob Poe, who did not allow a hit in the last two innings and had a trio of strikeouts with just one walk.
Two more tilts against the Lions remain, as the Buffs return to the confines of Anglin Field for a doubleheader starting at 12 p.m. on Saturday, Mar. 1.
