A pair of big innings propelled the Phoenix to the win as the Buffs dropped to 27-15 on the season.
Cumberland jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first, but Milligan scored once in the bottom of the inning before taking a 3-2 lead in the second thanks to run-scoring hits from Angel Lobo and Caleb Berry.
However, the Phoenix responded with a five-run outburst in the third. Milligan pulled within 7-5 with RBI singles from Miller Spence and Jack Sutton in the fifth, yet the visitors added a run in the sixth and four more in the eighth for a 12-5 advantage.
Vasili Kaloudis drove in his second run of the game in the ninth to make it a 12-6 final.
In addition to having two RBI, Kaloudis went 3-for-5 at the plate. Berry was the only other Buff with multiple hits as he went 2-for-5 with a run and an RBI.
Milligan returns to Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) play on Friday and Saturday when it visits Montreat for a three-game series. Friday's game is set for a 3 p.m. first pitch, while Saturday's doubleheader is slated to start at 12 p.m.
