Baseball powers to 15-1 AAC Tournament win over St. Andrews
KINGSPORT, Tenn. (May 2, 2023) – The Milligan University baseball team used a season-high 21 hits and scored in six-straight innings as the Buffs downed St. Andrews 15-1 in a win-an-in opening round game at the Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) Tournament at Hunter Wright Stadium on Tuesday.
KINGSPORT, Tenn. (May 2, 2023) – The Milligan University baseball team used a season-high 21 hits and scored in six-straight innings as the Buffs downed St. Andrews 15-1 in a win-an-in opening round game at the Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) Tournament at Hunter Wright Stadium on Tuesday.
Milligan moves into double-elimination tournament play as the final team in pod A of the AAC Tournament. The Buffs move to 28-20 on the season while St. Andrews concludes its year with a 20-23 record.
Jaden Steagall put the Buffs ahead early with a three run homer with two outs in the top the of the second inning. The Knights answered with an RBI double in the bottom of the frame to make it a 3-1 ballgame.
Braden Spano smacked an RBI single to score Caleb Berry from second base in the top of the third to extend Milligan's lead to 4-1.
The Buffs added three runs in the top of the fourth inning. Steagall scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Logan Hullette and Berry and Spano had run-scoring singles to grow Milligan's edge to 7-1.
The Buffs had nine-straight batters reach base safely to begin the fifth inning. Andrew Mathias had an RBI single and Hullette drove in a run with a double. Berry and Spano both had two-run singles as Milligan's lead swelled to 13-1.
Anthony Guzman doubled home Berry in sixth as Milligan led 14-1. An error in the seventh led to an unearned run for the Buffs.
Brandon Marello allowed just two hits and one run in six innings of action to pick up his sixth win of the season. He accrued his 200th career strikeout as he punched out four in the ballgame. Graham Hooker worked a scoreless seventh inning.
Spano was 4-5 with four RBI and a double. Berry had three hits, a double, four RBI and scored twice. Steagall had three hits, three RBI and three runs scored. Mathias also had three hits and two runs. Haire and Hullette both had two hits.
The Buffs square off with No. 3 Tennessee Wesleyan tomorrow evening at 7:00 p.m. at Hunter Wright Stadium.
