Baseball downs No. 25 Cumberland 7-2
MILLIGAN, Tenn. (March 29, 2023) – The Milligan University baseball team took down a ranked opponent for the first time since the 2021 season as the Buffs downed No. 25 Cumberland 7-2 at Anglin Field on Wednesday.
MILLIGAN, Tenn. (March 29, 2023) – The Milligan University baseball team took down a ranked opponent for the first time since the 2021 season as the Buffs downed No. 25 Cumberland 7-2 at Anglin Field on Wednesday.
Milligan moves to 4-1 in midweek games this season and 18-14 overall. The Phoenix fall to 21-6-1. Cumberland has won 14 out of its last 16 games with its only two losses coming to the Buffs.
The Buffs scored a run in each of the first three innings on and never trailed in ballgame. Angel Lobo walked with the bases loaded in the first, the Buffs added a run in the second and Caleb Berry blasted a solo home run in the third to give Milligan a 3-0 edge.
Cumberland struck back with a solo home run in the fourth.
Josh Lail smacked a two-out two-run single in the fifth to grow Milligan's edge to 5-1.
Casey Haire doubled in Berry and Lail lifted a sacrifice fly in the seventh to push the Buffs' lead to 7-1.
Cumberland scored a run in the ninth but the Buffs held on for the 7-2 victory.
Milligan's pitching combination of Canyon Geren, Creed Werker and Austin Maxey held Cumberland's bats at bay. Geren started the game and pitched into the fifth inning, allowing just two hits and one run. Weker worked 2.2 innings without allowing a hit and Maxey finished off the final two frames.
Berry had two hits, a home run, RBI and two runs scored. Haire doubled, scored twice and drove in a run. Lail had three RBI on the day.
The Buffs head to Bob Jones for a three-game set this weekend.
