Gamboa pitches Baseball past Montreat 3-1
MILLIGAN, Tenn. (March 10, 2023) – Starting pitcher Jimmy Gamboa tossed a complete games as the Milligan University baseball team defeated Montreat 3-1 at Anglin Field on Friday afternoon.
MILLIGAN, Tenn. (March 10, 2023) – Starting pitcher Jimmy Gamboa tossed a complete games as the Milligan University baseball team defeated Montreat 3-1 at Anglin Field on Friday afternoon.
The Buffs move to 12-9 on the year and 3-7 in Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) play. Montreat falls to 11-12, 6-4 AAC.
Gamboa and Montreat starter Case Jaworski both pitched the entire game and posted double-digit strikeouts for their respective teams. Gamboa punched out 11 in nine innings while Jaworski had 10 strikeouts in eight frames.
The Buffs scored the game's first run in the third inning when courtesy runner Kobe Miles scored on a bunt by Brandon Marello. Milligan added two more runs in the bottom of the fourth with Bradon Spano and Jack Sutton both notching two-out RBI hits. Spano doubled home Casey Haire and Sutton scored Spano on a base hit.
Montreat responded with a two-out run of its own in the fifth to make it a 3-1 ballgame. The Cavs threatened to add more with runners on second and third with two outs but Gamboa coaxed a flyout to end the inning.
In the top of the eighth, Montreat put runners on second and third with one out as the Cavs opened the inning with a walk, single and sacrifice bunt. Gamboa had the next two batters fly out and ground out to escape the threat.
Gamboa sat down the Cavs in order in the ninth to earn the nine-inning complete game win in 111 pitches.
The Buffs and Cavaliers play an AAC doubleheader at Anglin Field tomorrow starting at 1:00 p.m.
