ELIZABETHTON, Tenn. (April 16, 2021) – After rallying in the final inning to force extras, Anthony Guzman tripled and Justin Greene sent him home on a walk-off single in the bottom of the eighth to send Milligan University to a 4-3 win over Union Friday in the second game of the series.
Union topped the Buffaloes in game one 7-6 as the teams split the Appalachian Athletic Conference doubleheader held at Joe O'Brien Field.
Game Two | Greene's walk-off lifts Buffs
Brandon Marello struck out nine over seven innings on the way to what would have been a complete game if the game had not gone extra innings. He received no decision as Chancery Hall relieved him in the eighth, striking out the side before Milligan's eighth-inning rally sent the Buffs to the win.
Guzman started the final inning off with a triple off the wall in left-center field, nearly an inside the park home run. Five pitches later, Greene faced a 1-2 count before slapping a single to left to complete the walk-off win.
Game One | Buffs' late rally not enough
Union took the early lead and had the answer every time the Buffs battled back. An error in the third helped the Bulldogs score three, although Milligan got two of those back in the bottom of the fourth on a Kirby Smith two-RBI single up the middle.
After Union expanded the lead again with two runs in the fifth, again aided by a Milligan error, Milligan battled back to tie the game with four runs in the seventh. Augustus Fraley hit a two-out single in that frame, scoring Justin Greene, and the big hit came off the bat of Casey Haire, who smacked a two-out double to left-center field, scoring Fraley from first to cap a four-run inning that tied the game 6-6.
Milligan looked to have all the momentum from that rally in the seventh, but Union would take the lead once again on a Milligan error, finishing the game 7-6.
Guzman led the Buffs at the plate, going 3-for-5. Greene and Fraley also finished with multiple hits.
Up next
Milligan and Union finish the series Saturday with a single nine-inning game starting at 12 p.m.
