MONTREAT, N.C. (March 4, 2020) – The Milligan College baseball team stepped away from Appalachian Athletic Conference action but still played an AAC foe Wednesday in a midweek matchup against Montreat College. Montreat jumped out to an early lead and won 7-5, breaking Milligan's four-game winning streak.
Blake Dutton produced three hits in a 3-for-5 effort while Kirby Smith hit his second home run of the season in the loss.
Montreat earned the early lead with a run-scoring triple in the first inning followed immediately by a run-scoring groundout. It made it 2-0 and the Cavaliers added another run in each of the next two innings to go ahead 4-1 after three. Milligan managed to trim the deficit to two after Kirby's homer, a solo shot to left in the fourth, but Montreat answered back an inning later with three in the fifth.
Down 7-2, the Buffs put together a three-run rally in the seventh after loading the bases with one out, but that was all the scoring either team would do the rest of the way.
Up next, Milligan hosts CIU this weekend in a three-game AAC series where the Buffs will look to improve upon their league record that remains unblemished.
