WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. (Feb. 17, 2020) – Twice the Milligan College baseball team bounced back from a deficit to tie, but twice the Buffaloes lost at No. 11 University of the Cumberlands Monday afternoon on the road. Cumberlands won the first game 2-1 in 10 innings before winning the second game 3-2, both via walk-off.
The games represented the fourth in a row against nationally ranked competition but the third straight time the Buffs lost via walk-off.
Three straight two-out singles culminating with a Blake Dutton base hit to left field put the Buffs on the board in game one after Cumberlands had taken a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Dutton's single scored Ben Grable, but it would be all the scoring the Buffs would do in the opening game of the nonconference doubleheader.
Cumberlands took an early lead in game two, as well, scoring one in the first and one in the second before Milligan tied it up with two runs in the fourth. Again, it all came with two out and the bases clear, as Kirby Smith drew a two-out walk then Chance Hall hit a two-run homer.
Garrett Wilkins and Brandon Marello gave Milligan two strong starts. Wilkins went the first nine innings of game one, holding the No. 11-ranked Patriots to only three hits, three walks and two earned runs while striking out nine. Marello went the first five innings of game two, allowing six hits, no walks and two earned runs. He struck out five.
Up next, Milligan is scheduled to host Shawnee State University this weekend in a three-game set.
