Game 1
JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Feb. 12, 2020) – Kirby Smith hit a three-run home run in the second inning, and the Milligan College baseball team's pitching staff combined for 15 strikeouts in a 15-7 victory over Alice Lloyd College Wednesday night at TVA Credit Union Ballpark. This marked Milligan's fifth straight win.
Smith's home run was part of a 4-for-4 effort where he hit a double and a homer and drove in four runs. Brandon Marello joined Smith in the four-hit category, going 4-for-6, and five other Buffs produced multiple hits. As a team, Milligan tallied 22 hits and more than doubled its highest scoring output of the season.
Smith's home run helped the Buffs jump out to a 6-3 lead after three innings, but Alice Lloyd bounced back with three runs to tie the game in the top of the fourth.
Milligan took the lead again for good in the bottom half on a Will Findley two-RBI single. The Buffs then padded the lead with scoring in the last three innings, including a three-spot in the sixth. Augustus Fraley drove in one run that inning on a single to left, and Findley came around to score, as well, on a single by Marello.
Garrett Wilkins made the start and went the first three innings, striking out three. Graham Hooker (two), Deaglan Malally (three), Caleb Wilson (four) and Brian Baxa (three) all earned a piece of the strikeout parade. The strikeout total of 15 marked Milligan's highest since at least the 2004 season. The program's strikeout record is 19, set in 1968.
Up next, Milligan plays twice over the weekend, and both games will be played at Dobyns-Bennett High School. First up, the Buffs play No. 9 Indiana Tech Saturday at 6 p.m. Then, they play No. 1 Tennessee Wesleyan Sunday at 2:30 p.m.
