Big fourth inning backs Browning’s gem
Brock Browning tossed a complete-game shutout to lead the Milligan College baseball team to a 5-0 victory over Thomas More University Saturday afternoon at ETSU’s Thomas Stadium.
JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Feb. 8, 2020) – Brock Browning tossed a complete-game shutout to lead the Milligan College baseball team to a 5-0 victory over Thomas More University Saturday afternoon at ETSU's Thomas Stadium.
Milligan was originally scheduled to play two games Saturday as part of the second annual Clash of Conferences tournament, but weather caused the cancelation of the Buffs' late game.
The defensive effort
The temperature was 34 degrees at first pitch, but Browning brought some fire to Thomas Stadium in the Buffs' first game of the day. Browning faced only five over the minimum in the complete-game shutout, scattering four hits and two walks while striking out three. Milligan moved to 2-2 on the season.
Browning worked around a leadoff double in the first and a one-out triple in the third to help keep the shutout intact. He picked up his third strikeout looking for the final out of the game after working around the first two batters reaching base in the top of the seventh.
The offensive effort
Ben Grable put the Buffs on the board in the fourth inning in what proved to be a big inning. With his second hit of the day, Grable made it 1-0 with a base hit to left that drove in Chance Hall. Milligan followed with three more runs in the inning, one off a Brandon Marello walk with the bases loaded, then two off a Juan Vasquez single to left.
Will Oliver gave Browning and the Buffs one more piece of cushion in the bottom of the sixth, reaching on a single, going to second on a stolen base, third on a wild pitch, then scoring on a Vasquez two-out single.
Marello finished the game with two RBI's, Vasquez was 1-for-4 with two RBI's, and Blake Dutton paced Milligan's offensive effort with a 3-for-3 effort at the dish. Grable went 2-for-2 with an RBI.
Up next
Milligan plays two more times Sunday to close out the Clash of Conferences tournament, hosting Thomas More again at 3 p.m., then Rio Grande at 6 p.m. Pending weather and field conditions, the Buffs are then scheduled to host Alice Lloyd College Wednesday on Anglin Field.
