CLEVELAND, Ga. (Feb. 1, 2020) – Senior Juan Vasquez hit a three-run homer to give the Buffs a boost midway through game one, but the Milligan College baseball team ended up losing twice, 6-4 and 4-0, at Truett McConnell University Saturday in a season opening nonconference doubleheader.
Vasquez's homer was the second of two hits he posted in Milligan's season opener and made it a 6-4 game in the top of the fifth inning, but that was all the scoring the Buffs would do in the game, and ultimately the rest of the day.
Brian Baxa provided Milligan with the other RBI on a sacrifice fly in the top of the second, scoring Blake Dutton. However, by then, Truett had already jumped out to a 4-0 advantage after the first inning, and the Bears added two more in the bottom half to round out their scoring in game one. Brock Browning made the start but suffered the loss, only going the first two innings and allowing five hits and six runs.
Chance Hall made the start in game two and had better success but still suffered the loss as he gave up three runs, only one earned, over the first three innings. Jack Bembry pitched the final three innings and allowed only one unearned run over three innings.
Up next, Milligan and Truett wrap up the three-game set, which officially counts as a nonconference series, Sunday with the finale scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. The Buffs will be home next Friday and Saturday at TVA Credit Union Ballpark in Johnson City for the second annual Clash of Conferences Tournament.
