1995 HALL OF FAME INDUCTEE | JACOB C. RANGE
The late Jacob C. "Cowboy" Range of Newport News, Virginia, will be named to the Milligan College Athletics Hall of Fame on October 28. The hall of fame was established several years ago to honor outstanding athletes, coaches and other significant participants in the athletics program of Milligan College.
A native of Johnson City, Tennessee, Range was a member of the Science Hill High School Hilltoppers football team.
Range entered Milligan in 1934 after graduating from Science Hill. He played on the football teams of Steve Lacy and served as co-captain his senior year. He was outstanding candidate for all-conference guard.
Range went on to earn a master's degree in physical education from the College of William and Mary. He began teaching and coaching at Coeburn High School in Virginia in 1939 and then went on to have a long career in Newport News, Virginia.
He was a teacher and head football coach at the high school from 1944 to 1961, assistant coordinator of health and physical education for the city schools from 1961 to 1966 and coordinator of health, physical education and safety from 1966 until his retirement in 1975.
A member of the Newport News Kiwanis Club, he had served as the club's president and as lieutenant governor of the organization's 13th District. He was a member of the Newport News Club's board of directors.
Range had served the Newport News Chapter of the American Red Cross, and its successor, the Hampton Roads Chapter, in various volunteer roles. He had served on the board of directors of the Peninsula YMCA, as a volunteer with the Peninsula United Way, as a member of the board of merit examiners for the Peninsula Boy Scout council and as a member of the board of the Alcohol Safety Action Program.
Range was a member of the National, Virginia, and Newport News Education Associations and the American and Virginia Associations of Health, Physical Education and Recreation Associations.
Range was a member of the Grace United Methodist Church, where he taught a Sunday School class for high school seniors.
"Cowboy" Range died in 1980, and is survived by his wife, Mrs. Irene Coleman Range.
