2011 HALL OF FAME INDUCTEE | CASSIE LOMISON MACKELL
Cassie Lomison Mackell graduated from Milligan College in 2006 with a Bachelor of Science degree in communications. During her four years at Milligan, she played #1 singles and #1 doubles. She was named to the Appalachian Athletic Conference All-Conference team four years in a row and named AAC Sportswoman of the Year her senior year. Cassie partnered up with sister Cheri (Lomison) Blevins to win the AAC Doubles Title in 2003 & 2005. Cassie was also named Region XII Player of the Year when her team won conference and advanced to the regional tournament in 2005. During her senior campaign, Mackell was ranked as high as No. 28 in the nation for singles and was the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) regional doubles finalist with partner Krissi (Denton) McIntire. Upon graduation, Mackell was awarded the 2006 NAIA ITA/Arthur Ashe Leader & Sportsmanship Award.
Off the court, Cassie was a member of the Social Affairs’ committee’s Event Council, and she served as a writer and production editor for Milligan’s student newspaper. Academically strong, she earned Dean’s List recognition, and she was distinguished as a Champions of Character winner in 2004.
Following graduation, Cassie served as Communications Coordinator at Horizon International in Pendleton, Indiana, maintaining all media for the company—from its website to its newsletters. During that time, Cassie opened a tennis business, giving individual and group lessons for children and adults. She began with five clients, and by the end of two years had more than 70.
In 2008, Cassie accepted a full-time job at NAIA school Marian University as the women’s head tennis coach and administrative assistant for the athletic department. She has also been assisting her husband, Steve Mackell, the past two years as the assistant coach of the men’s tennis team at Marian. She manages all business aspects of Marian University athletics, coordinates transportation for 21 sports, and coaches 14 ladies on the women’s tennis team and 12 men on the men’s tennis team.
During her four years of coaching at Marian University, Cassie has had four players named All-Conference, has had one player go the ITA National Tournament, and was named Mid-Central College Conference Coach of the Year in 2009-2010. She coached the ITA Midwest Regional Champion and has a 40-23 Coaching Record at Marian. Four out of six tennis records at Marian have been broken by her players.
