1998 HALL OF FAME INDUCTEE | BARRY WALLACE
Milligan College’s Athletic Hall of Fame has elected Barry Wallace (’68) to its prestigious list for his outstanding ability in Milligan sports and committed integrity in Christian faith.
Barry Milton Wallace is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Milton Wallace. His father was a 1936 Olympic runner for Canada in the 5,000 and 10,000 meters in Berlin, Germany. Wallace came to Milligan in 1964 withholding many of his father’s athletic abilities. He ran both cross-country and track under the leadership of Coach Duard Walker. He quickly became one of the best runners, leading the Buffs to three Volunteer State Athletic Conference championships. During this string of championships, he set the cross-country course record for Milligan.
Wallace also led the track team to three VSAC championships. He set the one and two mile records in times of 4:22.6 (1 mile) and 9:39.5 (2 mile). These records still hold today.
Wallace presently resides in Bethel, OH, with his wife, Darlene. They have 3 children, Robert, Jeff, and Lorinda. His son, Jeff, is a 1997 graduate of Milligan. Wallace has worked as a 7th grade science teacher for 27 years in Batavia, OH. He has also acted as an athletic director/coach of the junior and senior high. For 10 years, he was the minister of Monterey Christian Church in Monterey, OH.
Overall, his athletic achievements from 1964-68 in running were spectacular. He attributes much of his success to Coach Walker, who was not only a coach, but a second father to a young man who knew no one when he came to Milligan from Canada in 1964.
