MILLIGAN COLLEGE, Tenn. (Oct. 15, 2019) – The Milligan College volleyball team is now 6-0 in the month of October after defeating Appalachian Athletic Conference member Tennessee Wesleyan in three sets (25-13, 25-19, 25-13) Tuesday night inside Steve Lacy Fieldhouse. With Tuesday's win the Buffs advance to 17-10 (11-4 AAC).
Milligan came out hot in the first set with the first point of the night coming from a Carley Gregory kill. They took an early lead on the Bulldogs with an 8-2 run. The Buffs finished the first set with 17 kills and only one attack error. The Buffs had a hitting percentage in the first set of .485. Julie Dockery and Gregory each had four kills in the first set and Alyssa Gibson and Julia Codispoti each had three.
Milligan continued to dominate in the second set, recording 14 kills and three aces. Milligan went up on the Bulldogs 20-10 but then Wesleyan went on a 9-3 run to make the score 23-19. Gregory was able to get a service ace, and the Buffs got their winning point through a Bulldog attack error to give Milligan the two points they needed to win.
The third set was back and forth in the beginning with both the Buffs and the Bulldogs tied at 10-10. Milligan then went on a 15-3 run to secure the third set and match victory. During their run the Buffs recorded nine kills, three from Codispoti. Layla Grant picked up the game winning point with a service ace.
By the numbers
Kellee Geren had 33 assists on the night with her two main targets being Gregory who had 13 kills and Codispoti who had 10. The Buffs defense was led by Ashelyn Vandergriff with 13 digs and Grant with 11.
The Buffs are on the road for the next three matches with their first one being Tuesday, Oct. 22, at Bluefield. Milligan's next home match will be Tuesday, Oct. 29, against Montreat.
