Men’s Soccer ties at No. 20 CIU
COLUMBIA, S.C. (September 16, 2023) – The Milligan University men’s soccer team battled to a 1-1 draw with No. 20 CIU on Saturday evening in South Carolina.
COLUMBIA, S.C. (September 16, 2023) – The Milligan University men's soccer team battled to a 1-1 draw with No. 20 CIU on Saturday evening in South Carolina.
The matchup featured the defending Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) regular season champion, Milligan, and the defending conference tournament champion in CIU. The Buffs move to 4-2-1 on the season and 1-0-1 in AAC action. CIU remains unbeaten at 5-0-2, 3-0-1 AAC.
With the clock ticking under 15 minutes to play in the first half, Kai Slinn pressured a CIU pass in the midfield and received the ball from Simen Haraldstad going towards the penalty area. He angled a pass forward to Inaki Moreno up the right side, who one-timed a shot into the lower left corner past the charging Rams goalkeeper, to give the Buffs a 1-0 edge.
Milligan carried that one-goal lead into halftime. Milligan outshot CIU 3-2 in the first 45 minutes while the Rams held a 4-1 advantage in corner kicks.
In the 57th minute, James Bakou served a cross in to the penalty area and connected with Santiago Corral, whose header was tipped over the crossbar.
With just over 15 minutes remaining in regulation, a long CIU throw-in bounced in the penalty box and allowed the Rams to get a close-range header that was snared out of the air by Adria Alles to preserve Milligan's lead.
The Rams tied the game at one in the 79th minute with a spinning shot into the bottom right corner past a diving Alles.
With five minutes left in regulation, Greg Anderson had a header tipped away at the last moment and in the following corner kick, the Buffs had a shot sail wide to the right.
In the 89th minute, Milligan was awarded a free kick to the left of the CIU 18-yard box but could not attempt a shot. In the final minute, CIU had a free kick from just inside midfield into the Milligan box and fared no better as the game ended in a 1-1 draw.
CIU held a slight edge in shots (8-7) and shots on goal (4-2) and had seven corners compared to three for Milligan.
The Buffs host Bryan on Wednesday evening.
