Men’s Soccer falls to UT Southern 3-1

MILLIGAN, Tenn. (September 2, 2023) – In a game that featured 31 fouls and nine cards, the Milligan University men's soccer team dropped a competitive match to UT Southern 3-1 at Anglin Field on Saturday.
The Buffs fall to 2-2 on the year while UT Southern remains unbeaten at 4-0.
Both teams converted penalty kick goals in the first half with Inaki Moreno scoring his fourth goal of the season after Alex Panner was brought down in the box in the game's third minute.
The Firehawks got even in the 36th minute with a goal from the penalty spot. The game was tied at one going into the half. Both teams managed three shots on goal in the first half.
In the opening minute o the second half Moreno fed Greg Anderson at the top of the penalty area and his well-paced shot was stopped by UT Southern's keeper. Two minutes later, the Firehawks had a similar opportunity with Adria Alles making a diving save at the right post.
Simen Haraldstad almost gave the Buffs the lead when he hit the crossbar from almost midfield when challenging a Firehawk pass in the 73rd minute. Ludvig Wille made a point-blank save in the 75th miute on a shot from the right post.
UT Southern took the lead with a goal off a corner kick in the 76th minute and added an insurance goal in the final five minutes after Milligan pushed its goalie up to try and score on a free kick at the end of the game.
The Buffs had two players receive red cards in the second half and surrendered both second half goals after having to play shorthanded.
UT Southern owned a 14-10 advantage in shots (10-5 SOG) and both teams recorded five corner kicks.
The Buffs travel to (RV) WVU Tech on Thursday.
