Jonathan Liggett’s all-tournament finish led the Milligan University men’s golf team in their season-opening event Monday and Tuesday and Johnson City Country Club.
JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Sept. 29, 2020) – Jonathan Liggett's all-tournament finish led the Milligan University men's golf team in their season-opening event Monday and Tuesday and Johnson City Country Club.
Teams played 18 holes on Monday and were scheduled for 18 holes on Tuesday, but the tournament was canceled after round one due to inclement weather.
"The fivesome, play with your own team format proved to be really fun," Head Coach Tony Wallingford said. "The folks at Johnson City Country Club did a great job hosting the event, which featured 20 teams. For our first tournament of the fall, both men's and women's teams showed solid potential."
Liggett carded 73 to finish only three strokes off the lead. Caleb Milligan (74), Ty Beasley (75), Dane Rheinecker (77), Brandon Hammond (77) and Reece Walker (78) all finished inside the top 20 in the field of nearly 50 individuals.
As a team, the Buffs tallied 304 and landed fourth in the field of eight. Walters State Community College won the event at 290 while University of the Cumberlands' Gustav Barden earned medalist honors with a 70.
"Our men were outstanding early in the round," Wallingford said. "I thought ultimately they put excessive pressure on themselves because we were at Johnson City Country Club. I saw a lot of positives and really like this team."
Up next, Milligan heads to the Music City Invitational, set for Monday-Tuesday, Oct. 5-6, at Twelve Stones Golf Club in Goodlettsville, Tennessee.
