WILLIAMSBURG, KY. (March 15, 2022)— The Milligan University baseball team was defeated in a nonconference matchup 16-4 by No. 17 Cumberlands on Tuesday afternoon. The Buffs lineup produced eight hits while the pitching staff combined to strikeout six for the game.
Milligan falls to 19-10 while Cumberlands moves to 15-9 on the season.
The Buffs picked up two hits in the top of the first but were unable to push across any runs. A single into left field by Anthony Guzman followed by a single into left by Braden Spano gave Milligan one runner in scoring position before a strikeout ended the inning.
The Patriots, on the other hand, picked up five runs on five hits in the home half of the first. After the leadoff batter flew out to center field, the number two batter doubled down the left field line and later scored on an RBI single into right center. Three home runs in the next four batters for Cumberlands broke the game open as they took a 5-0 lead into the second.
The Buffs responded by scoring four runs on four hits in the top of the third. A fly out into center field followed by a Brandon Marello single to left gave the Buffs their first baserunner of the inning. Marello stole second base while Guzman drew a walk in the next at bat to put runners on first and second with one out. An RBI-single through the right side of the infield by Justin Greene followed by a three-run home run by Spano trimmed the Patriots lead to just one run.
A throwing error by the Buffs in the bottom half of the fifth led to one Cumberlands' run in the inning. The Patriots added eight more runs in the bottom of the sixth on five hits. Two RBI doubles and a three-run home run opened the door to a huge inning for Cumberlands as they took a 16-4 lead into the seventh inning. A 1-2-3 inning in the top of the seventh ended any chances of a comeback for Milligan as the Patriots picked up the win.
Spano led the offensive attack for the Buffs going three-for-three with a home run, three RBIs and a run scored. Greene also had a solid game at the plate going two-for-three with a double, RBI and run scored. Marello, Guzman, and Robert Salcedo picked up one hit apiece in the contest as well.
The Buffs will return to the diamond on Friday for an Appalachian Athletic Conference series at Kentucky Christian University at 2:00 p.m.
