KINGSPORT, Tenn. (May 2, 2019) – The Milligan College baseball team's 2019 season came to a close Thursday at Hunter Wright Stadium on the second day of the Appalachian Athletic Conference tournament. The Buffaloes lost to Truett McConnell University, 14-6, and finished the season with a record of 20-26 (11-16 AAC).
Junior Blake Dutton led Milligan with a 3-for-5 effort at the plate. Seven other Buffs had hits in the game.
Senior starting pitcher Camron Harper suffered the loss after going the first 4 1/3 innings. Wyatt Richardson (2/3 innings), Wyatt Sowers (one inning), TJ Wilson (two innings) and Jack Bembry (one inning) all saw relief roles.
Truett McConnell jumped out to an early lead with a grand slam in the top of the first and never looked back. The Bears added three runs in the third, three in the fifth and three in the sixth to go out to what was a 13-0 lead at one point.
Milligan's lone scoring inning came in the bottom of the eighth. Kirby Smith drove in Milligan's first run with a bases-loaded hit by pitch, then Dutton followed on the next pitch with a single up the middle, scoring two. Milligan scored three more in the inning, all coming on a two-out, bases-loaded triple from William Oliver to score Smith, Dutton and Juan Vasquez.
Milligan produced plenty of other chances to score, most notably in the third and fifth when they loaded the bases. However, a groundout on the first occasion and a strikeout on the second ended both opportunities.
