1998 HALL OF FAME INDUCTEE | EDWIN HUDGINS JR.
We are pleased to announce one of 1998’s inductees into the Milligan College Athletics Hall of Fame: Edwin “Skip” Hudgins, Jr., class of 1974.
Skip began teaching after graduation and in 1977 was named varsity boys’ basketball assistant coach at Orange County High School, Virginia. The next year he became the varsity boys’ basketball head coach and the varsity girls’ and boys’ cross-country head coach at the same institution. In 1980, he transferred to Albemarle High School and was named the varsity boys’ basketball assistant coach, a position he held for two years. In 1983, Skip went to Western Albemarle High School in Crozet, Virginia, where he acted as varsity girls’ basketball head coach and varsity boys’ basketball assistant for six years. He was also named varsity baseball head coach, a position that he still holds.
Skip has won many honors during his career. His baseball team has been the Valley District Champions three times, was the Region II runner-up in 1996 and was State quarterfinalists in 1996. Skip, himself, has been named Central Virginia Coach of the Year four times and honored as Valley District Coach of the Year twice. Skip’s overall record is impressive with 151 wins, 115 losses and four ties.
Skip has been a positive role model over the years that his players could look up to. Jamie Brown, former Athletic Director of Western Albemarle High School, says this about him: “Enthusiasm and dedication are the highlights of Skip’s attributes. Whereas the many years of successful seasons would seem to be the indicators of enthusiasm and dedication, it was the occasional ‘rebuilding’ years that impressed me even more. During these years, Skip’s enthusiasm and dedication were just as evident in his continuing positive and hard-working approach to the kids and the wonderful game of baseball. Skip Hudgins is truly an outstanding high school coach.”
Skip is married to Linda Hudgins and has three children: Trey, Megan and Tyler.
It is with great honor that Milligan College presents this award to Edwin “Skip” Hudgins, Jr. Skip has proved his dedication to athletics and to the players over the years and greatly deserves the honor to be bestowed upon him.
