2024 HALL OF FAME INDUCTEE | CHELSEA SPIVEY BAKER
Chelsea Spivey Baker is a distinguished volleyball coach and educator with a stellar career as both a player and a mentor. A 2009 graduate of Gate City High School, she played in the Virginia High School League state championship all four years, securing two state titles and two runner-up finishes. In 2008, Chelsea was named State Player of the Year. She still holds the Virginia state records for most career assists with 3,538 and most sets played with 7,492.
During her time at Milligan, Chelsea continued her volleyball dominance. She held the school record for assists until 2019, finishing her career with 4,279 assists. Her college career was filled with accolades including:
· Being named to the All-Freshman team
· Freshman of the Year in 2009
· 2010 All-Tournament Team
· 4 time First-Team All-Conference
· 2 x Appalachian Athletic Conference Setter of the Year
· 2 x American Volleyball Coaches Association All-Northeast Region
· NAIA All-American Honorable Mention
· 3 x AAC All-Academic Team
Chelsea completed her bachelor’s degree in only 3 years and competed as a graduate student during her final season. She received her masters of education in 2014.
Chelsea began her coaching career soon after graduation. As the head coach at Daniel Boone High School, she led her team to the state tournament for the first time since 2003. Her team is one of only three in the school’s history (since its opening in 1971) to reach the state tournament. Chelsea’s exceptional coaching was recognized with the Coach of the Year award in 2013, 2016, and 2019.
In addition to her role as a coach, Chelsea has been an educator at Daniel Boone High School, where she has taught Physical Education for four years and has worked in Driver’s Education for the past eight years, also serving as the department leader. She plays a vital role on multiple committees at the school, further demonstrating her leadership.
Chelsea has been married to her husband, Eric Baker, for seven years. Together, they have a 17-year-old stepson, Mason, and a 5-year-old daughter, Charlee, who both attend school in Gate City, Virginia. Beyond her career in teaching and coaching, Chelsea works with her husband to manage their rental properties. In her free time, she loves traveling with her family, relaxing on the lake, and spending quality time with her extended family.
