1999 HALL OF FAME INDUCTEE | CARL STEPHENS
It is an honor to induct Mr. Carl Stephens as a 1999 member of the Milligan College Athletics Hall of Fame.
Mr. Stephens graduated from Milligan College in 1935 as salutatorian of his class. He went on to the University of Tennessee and Nashville Law College, earning a master's and law degree respectively. Mr. Stephens came to Milligan in 1931 with an honors scholarship, and he played football for the Buffaloes for four years. He was the starting quarterback and served as team captain of the 1934 Smokey Mountain Athletic Conference championship team, Milligan's first ever football title. He remembers those days as some of the
biggest times in his life.
In terms of career endeavors, Mr. Stephens has built a bountiful resume. He began his professional career in Lenoir City and, later, in Nashville, serving as teacher, coach, corporate officer, attorney, and stockbroker. I suppose that it would be safe for one to consider Mr. Stephens a very "well-rounded" individual.
In 1959, Mr. Stephens and his late wife, Margaret, moved from Nashville to Sarasota, Florida. In 1960, they moved inland to the home where Mr. Stephens still lives today. Mr. Stephens retired as a stockbroker in 1978 after turning his business over to his son, Ken.
Looking back on his days at Milligan College, Mr. Stephens recalls many wonderful days as the people at Milligan took an interest in each student individually, and how it made a difference on the rest of his life.
Well Mr. Stephens, we want you to know that you have made a difference. It is our distinct pleasure to not only congratulate you on a life well lived, but to also induct you into the Milligan College Athletics Hall of Fame for the distinction you have brought to Milligan's athletic program.
Congratulations Mr. Stephens!
