Sophomore Bekah Owen led a group of six Buffaloes inside the top 13 as the No. 6 Milligan College women’s cross country team earned the Appalachian Athletic Conference runner-up Saturday morning at Boling Park. Milligan finished second to top-ranked SCAD Atlanta by two points.
In a meet which pitted two nationally ranked cross-country programs against one another, Milligan College came out on top in both the women’s race and the men’s race.
Sophomore Gabrielle Mardis led the No. 9 Milligan College women’s cross-country team to a runner-up finish in a deep field heavy with NCAA Division I and Division II competition Friday evening at the Queen City Invitational at McAlpine Creek Park. Mardis ran to a fourth-place finish individually with a 5k time of 18:16.
Both the No. 15 men and No. 17 women of the Milligan College cross country program ran an excellent race in the college’s first event on campus in its 20-year history. In a dual meet against Appalachian Athletic Conference member Tennessee Wesleyan, Milligan ran away with the victory on both sides.
All five competing Buffs finished in the top eight, and the No. 17 Milligan College women’s cross country team opened the season with an emphatic win at the Zaxby’s Open, hosted by Tusculum University, Friday night. Seniors Hannah Bell and Erica Stone led the way with the individual runner-up and third-place finish, respectively.
With a 2018 postseason finish of No. 12 and a 2019 preseason ranking of No. 17, Milligan College’s cross-country team looks to have another big year this fall.
