Women’s tennis wins dual against Mars Hill; men fall
The Milligan College women’s and men’s tennis teams competed against Mars Hill University Friday afternoon in a nonconference matchup with the women winning 5-2 and the men losing 3-4.
MARS HILL, N.C. (Oct. 18, 2019) – The Milligan College women's and men's tennis teams competed against Mars Hill University Friday afternoon in a nonconference matchup with the women winning 5-2 and the men losing 3-4.
The men battled it out with freshmen Derian Janeke and Carter Rigsby winning both of their singles matches and senior Taylor Graalman and Rigsby and Jose Giler and Janeke winning their doubles matches. Janeke won his match with a 6-3, 6-3 at the No. 3 spot, and Rigsby won in the No. 5 spot with a 6-3, 7-5. Junior Charlie Moseley and freshmen Giler and Justin Rigsby had their matches go into three sets but ultimately lost in the final set.
The women had four singles winners and two doubles winners as they dominated over the Lions of Mars Hill. Karson Light in the No. 3 spot suffered a loss in her first set before turning around and beating her opponent 6-4 and 6-0 in the final two sets. Marlaina Peterson in the No. 4 spot won both of her sets with a score of 6-4 in each set. Kaitlin Barrett in the No. 5 spot had to battle it out to three sets. She fell in the first set 5-7 then won the second set 6-4 then battled it out to win in the third set 11-9. Rachel Dove then rounded it off for the women in the No. 6 spot, winning her match in two sets 7-6, 6-2.
Light and McKenzie Grady and Peterson and Makenna Peterson won both of their doubles matches 6-1.
Up next, Milligan travels to Maryville College Sunday, Oct. 20. Match time is set for 1 p.m. After that Milligan only has one match left on their fall schedule before their spring season begins in February.
