Buffs begin season with several national cuts
The Milligan College swim teams began their 2019-20 season on Saturday at the Emmanuel Invite and captured second place finishes. The Buffs picked up many national qualifying times and junior transfer Mitch Martin broke the school record in the men’s 1000 freestyle. The Buffs competed against Appalachian Athletic Conference member Point University, LaGrange College, and host school Emmanuel College.
FRANKLIN SPRINGS, Ga. (Oct. 5, 2019) – The Milligan College swim teams began their 2019-20 season on Saturday at the Emmanuel Invite and captured second place finishes. The Buffs picked up many national qualifying times and junior transfer Mitch Martin broke the school record in the men's 1000 freestyle. The Buffs competed against Appalachian Athletic Conference member Point University, LaGrange College, and host school Emmanuel College.
Martin swam a time of 10:35.76, beating the previous 1000 freestyle record which was set in 2013 by Ryan Mahoney who had a time of 10:47.40.
National cuts
Maggie Halloran started her junior year off strong, finishing first in the 1000 yard freestyle with a time of 11:07:28, and scoring a national qualifying time in the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:28.12.
Logan Garazino had two national qualifying times at the event in the 50 freestyle, and the 100 backstroke. He finished fourth in the 50 with a time of 22.52, and third with a time of 55.28 in the 100.
Garazino was not the only Buff to earn a national cut from the 100 backstroke as senior Sterling Burnett picked up a national A cut in the event. Burnett finished with a time of 22.64. Burnett also picked up a national A cut in the men's 200 medley relay. The relay team included Burnett, freshmen Ben Hawkins and Ed Lee, and senior Matthew McFalls. The team finished second with a time of 1:41.39.
The women also scored a national A cut time in the women's 200 medley relay with the team of freshmen Reagan Fillinger and Rachel Scheffer, and juniors Jordan Clark and Lindsey Grow. The team placed third with a time of 1:58.78. Fillinger also made national qualifying time in the 200 freestyle with a time of 2:04.97.
The women also were able to clinch a national A cut time in the 200 freestyle relay with the team of sophomores Anna Backus and Marlie Henegar, and seniors Anna Hathcock and Isabel Siegel. The team placed in third with a time of 1:52.33.

Milligan hosts a Black vs. Orange Alumni Meet on Saturday, Oct. 19, starting at 12 p.m. The Buffs then travel to Barbourville, Kentucky, in a meet against Union and Bethel on Saturday, Oct. 26, starting at 1 p.m.
