Women’s Soccer edged at Montreat 1-0

BLACK MOUNTAIN, N.C. (October 14, 2023) – The Milligan University women's soccer team fell 1-0 at Montreat on Saturday evening.
The Buffs fall to 7-6-1 on the season and 6-4 in Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) play. Montreat moves to 8-4, 8-2 AAC.
The Buffs outshot Montreat 9-6 in the first half and had a 4-2 edge in shots on goal but it was the Cavaliers who held a 1-0 lead at the half.
The Buffs had several scoring chances in the first half but came up empty. Lauren Hawkley got behind the Montreat defense in the seventh minute but had her shot denied. Angeleena Waaland had the ball poke away by the Cavs' goalkeeper well off her line in the 11th minute. Waaland had a shot just outside the six-yard box disrupted in the 22nd and another shot saved in the 25th.
The Cavs scored in the 33rd minute with a shot beyond the 18-yard box that snuck into the lower left corner of the goal to give the hosts a first-half lead.
Natalie Roper nearly found an equalizer in the 57th minute as she beat the Montreat defense up the left sideline and had a shot at the left post deflected away.
The game was interrupted due to the lights in the stadium going out around the 60th minute. Followin g the delay, Waaland had a shot saved in the 70th minute and Roper hit the post in the 74th.
With just under 10 minute left in regulation, Waaland had a breakaway opportunity but was thwarted by Montreat goalkeeper Logan White.
Montreat finished with a 15-13 edge in shots despite Milligan owning a 7-3 advantage in shots on goal.
Akyla Walcott made two saves in the defeat.
Milligan hosts Brenau on Wednesday.
