Three Buffs receive AAC weekly honors
Three Milligan College athletes have received Appalachian Athletic Conference Athlete of the Week recognitions for their efforts in the week ending Jan. 26.
MILLIGAN COLLEGE, Tenn. (Jan. 27, 2020) – Three Milligan College athletes have received Appalachian Athletic Conference Athlete of the Week recognitions for their efforts in the week ending Jan. 26.
After receiving her first ever AAC weekly award last week, women's basketball member Kaely Gose received AAC Player of the Week recognition for a second consecutive week. Along with Gose, Sterling Burnett of the swim team received his second weekly honor of the season and Tim Thacker of the track and field team received his first weekly honor of the season, making it his third career weekly honor.
Gose has continued to be a key asset for the women's basketball team as they are on a six game winning streak, picking up two AAC wins this week against Tennessee Wesleyan and Columbia College. Against Wesleyan, Gose recorded her 10th double-double on the season with 21 points and 17 rebounds. Her game line also included three assists and four blocks with 7-for-8 shooting from the free throw line.
Against Columbia, Gose was able to capture her 11th double-double despite being in foul trouble early in the game. Gose had 15 points and 12 rebounds, with 10 of her rebounds coming before halftime. Gose finished the game 4-for-7 in field goals and perfect behind the free throw line. Gose is currently leading the Buffs with 14.7 points per game and 10.26 rebounds per game.
Gose and the Buffs hit the road for the next four games, first facing nearby Montreat College on Tuesday, Jan. 28.
Sterling Burnett
On his senior day, Burnett led Milligan to a draw against Mars Hill University this past weekend, winning three individual races. Burnett walked away with wins in the 50 meter backstroke with a time of 28.65, 50 meter freestyle with a time of 25.67 and the 100 meter backstroke with a time of 1:01.66.
Burnett and the Milligan swim team will compete again on Feb. 1, in Barbourville, Kentucky, against Union College and King University.
Tim Thacker
Thacker finished third overall in the mile with a time of 4:18.86, securing a national A standard and top time in the AAC and No. 4 time in the NAIA this season. Thacker also anchored the Milligan men's distance medley relay to victory with the relay team finishing with a time of 10:23.40. The Buffs DMR time is a national A standard, the No. 1 time in the AAC and No. 4 time in the NAIA.
Thacker, already a qualifier in the 1k, now has three national qualifying times this season.
The track and field team will compete again this upcoming weekend at ETSU for the Buccaneer Invitational.
