GREENEVILLE, Tenn. (Sept. 6, 2019) – Five Buffs landed in the top 11 on the way to a victory for the No. 15 Milligan College men's cross country team Friday night. Freshman Jake Crow led the way with a third-place individual finish as Milligan took the crown at the Zaxby's Open, hosted by Tusculum University.
"We knew Jake was going to be special, and he showed a tremendous amount of toughness today," Head Coach Chris Layne said. "I'm really looking forward to seeing how he develops as the season progresses."
Crow ran the 5k course in 16:30. Pablo Rivas (sixth/17:07), Seth Nicol (eighth/17:11), Evan Henson (ninth/17:12) and Eli Baldy (11th/17:20) rounded out the scoring for Milligan, posting some of the top times despite the hot and dry conditions.
Trent Herman (25th/18:46), Adam Wall (26th/18:50) and Caleb Peterson (28th/19:12) also competed for the Buffs and ran inside the top 30. This marked the second year in a row Milligan competed at Tusculum's event, as the Buffs ran to runners-up at last year's event, finishing second only to host Tusculum. This year, Milligan (34) topped the Pioneers (43) by nine points.
"We held a ton of our top crew out today," Layne said, "but I saw enough from this group to know they'll have an impact on our success moving forward."
Up next, Milligan competes at home, running against Tennessee Wesleyan University in a dual meet, the Dual at Buffalo Creek. The event is set for Friday, Sept. 13.
