94 Buffs recognized as 2019-20 Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athletes

The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) announced 2019-20 Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athlete awards on Tuesday, naming 94 members of Milligan University athletics teams to the list. Milligan women’s soccer led the way with 12 Buffs making the list, while men’s track & field followed as a close runner-up with 10.

18 Milligan teams earn NAIA Scholar Team Award

Eighteen Milligan University athletics teams impressively earned distinction as NAIA Scholar Teams for the 2019-2020 academic year, announced the NAIA on Tuesday as part of National Awards Day. These 18 teams were among over 2,000 total teams across the NAIA recognized with this award.

Both Milligan College cross-country teams, along with 12 individuals, have been recognized by the NAIA and U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association for their success in the classroom following the conclusion of the fall semester, announced the USTFCCCA Thursday.

After strong finishes from the men’s and women’s cross-country teams at the NAIA national championships, the Milligan College Athletic Department earned the No. 9 ranking in the NAIA Learfield IMG College Directors’ Cup fall standings.

Baker All-American, Buffs 14th nationally

Junior Nathan Baker can add NAIA Cross Country All-American to his long list of accomplishments with the No. 15 Milligan College men’s cross country and track & field program. A track national champion over the indoor 3000 meters and the 2019 Appalachian Athletic Conference Runner of the Year, Baker led Milligan to a 14th-place finish at the NAIA Cross Country National Championship Friday at Fort Vancouver National Historic Site.

No. 15 men head to national championship with high expectations

With the Appalachian Athletic Conference runner of the year, league runner-up and team AAC championship-winning squad, the No. 15 Milligan College men’s cross country team will finish the 2019 season at the 64th annual NAIA Men’s Cross Country National Championship. The race is set for Friday, Nov. 22, at 10:30 a.m. local time/1:30 p.m. EST.

Baker, Layne earn USTFCCCA Regional Recognition

Awards keep rolling in for the No. 15 Milligan College cross-country team. After winning the Appalachian Athletic Conference Championship title for the third time in the last five years, junior Nathan Baker was named the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association South Region Men’s Runner of the Year while Head Coach Chris Layne earned South Region Men’s Coach of the Year.

A strong finish at the Appalachian Athletic Conference Cross Country Championship helped the Milligan College women make another significant move in the national spotlight. After landing runner-up to No. 1 SCAD Atlanta by two points, the Buffs moved to No. 4 in the latest national poll.

Baker, Buffs win AAC Championship

Junior Nathan Baker earned Appalachian Athletic Conference Runner of the Year, and the No. 15 Milligan College men’s cross country team won the AAC Championship Saturday morning at Boling Park. This marked the third time in the last five years Milligan won the AAC title on the men’s side.

Cross-country maintains high rankings in national polls

Both the Milligan College women’s and men’s cross-country teams kept a high national ranking according to the latest NAIA coaches top 25 poll. The women remained in the top 10 for the seventh consecutive week, polling in at No. 7. The men landed this week at No. 13, marking 47 straight weeks inside the top 20.

Buffs make another big move in national polls

Race times and national rankings continue to get lower and lower for Milligan College’s cross-country teams. After a successful weekend which saw both the women and men finish runner-up in a large field loaded with tough competition, Milligan’s women moved to No. 6 while Milligan’s men moved to No. 12 according to the latest NAIA coaches top 25 poll.

Mardis, Baker named AAC Runner of the Week

Gabrielle Mardis and Nathan Baker, finishing fourth and ninth respectively in their races, led their team to an Appalachian Athletic Conference level win and runner-up finish in their meet heavy with NCAA Divisions I and II teams last week. Each running one of the fastest race times in Milligan history, Mardis and Baker were both recognized as AAC runner of the week for their stellar performance this past Friday at the Queen City Invitational.
