Tennis drops nonconference tilt with Georgetown
The Milligan College tennis teams started March with a nonconference match against Georgetown College Sunday afternoon at Mathes Tennis Center. The men jumped out front early and played the match fairly even but lost 5-2. The women posted a few close decisions but lost 7-0.
MILLIGAN COLLEGE, Tenn. (March 1, 2020) – The Milligan College tennis teams started March with a nonconference match against Georgetown College Sunday afternoon at Mathes Tennis Center. The men jumped out front early and played the match fairly even but lost 5-2. The women posted a few close decisions but lost 7-0.
Derian Janeke and Jose Giler, at No. 1 doubles, and Taylor Graalman and Mason Grear, at No. 2 doubles, earned easy wins to start the day, and the Buffs played a thrilling tiebreak at No. 3 doubles with Carter Rigsby and Justin Rigsby falling 12-10. However, Georgetown would take five of the six singles points on the way to winning the match. J. Rigsby picked up the Buffs' lone singles point with a 6-1, 5-7, 12-10 win at No. 6 singles, although three other matches went to a third set.
Graalman (10-7 in the super tiebreaker) lost despite winning the opening set while Grear (10-6) and C. Rigsby (10-6) bounced back from losing the first set only to fall in the super. Janeke's match, although only two sets, featured a couple of close sets, including a tiebreak in the second which he lost 7-4.
On the women's side, Marlaina Peterson and Rachel Dove battled back after losing the opening set of their singles matches only to fall in super tiebreakers. McKenzie Grady, playing against the No. 45-ranked player in the NAIA, lost in straight sets but played to a breaker in the first.
Up next, Milligan hits the road for Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, for five matches over spring break. The Buffs will be back home Wednesday, March 18, for a rescheduled match against Appalachian Athletic Conference foe Tennessee Wesleyan University. The match was originally scheduled for Monday, March 2.
