Women sweep, men split at Union
The Milligan College swimming team competed in Barbourville, Kentucky, on Saturday against Union College and Bethel University. The women defeated both Union and Bethel and the men defeated Bethel but fell to reigning Appalachian Athletic Conference champions Union College.
BARBOURVILLE, Ky. (Oct. 26, 2019) – The Milligan College swimming team competed in Barbourville, Kentucky, on Saturday against Union College and Bethel University. The women defeated both Union and Bethel and the men defeated Bethel but fell to reigning Appalachian Athletic Conference champions Union College.
Maggie Halloran dominated on the women's side, winning all three individuals and anchored winning two free relay teams. Halloran also had a new national A cut in the 200 freestyle and a national cut in the 200 backstroke.
New school records were set at the meet with Mitchell Martin re-breaking the 1000 freestyle, and Ben Hawkins breaking the 400 individual medley record. Hawkins went on to anchor and win the 200 freestyle relay coming right off of the 400 individual medley. He also achieved national cuts in the 100 breaststroke and the 400 individual medley.
There were many new national cuts achieved at this meet. Sterling Burnett had national times in the 50 and 200 backstroke and a national A cut in the 100 backstroke. Matthew McFalls had national times in the 50 and 200 freestyle, Jordan Clark in the 100 butterfly, Lindsey Grow in the 400 individual medley and the team of Burnett, McFalls, Hawkins and Logan Garazino in the men's 200 freestyle relay.
Up next, the Buffs travel to Emory & Henry for a meet on Friday, Nov. 1, at 5 p.m. Milligan will then return home and face Lees-McRae that Saturday with the meet to begin at 11 a.m.
