MILLIGAN COLLEGE, Tenn. (Oct. 29, 2019) – Senior Roberto Fernandez Garrido of the Milligan College men's soccer team has been selected as the NAIA men's soccer offensive player of the week for the week ending Oct. 27. The NAIA made the announcement Tuesday, selecting Garrido from a pool of over 15 nominees.
Garrido, already the Appalachian Athletic Conference offensive player of the week this week for the fifth time this season, scored seven goals in two matches. Five of them, including the first three of the match, came in a 10-1 win over Kentucky Christian last Wednesday. Garrido then scored both goals in the Buffs' 6-2 loss at home against Bryan. They both gave Milligan a spark in the second half, cutting into Bryan's 3-0 lead and making it a one-goal game shortly after the halftime break.
Garrido is the AAC and NAIA leader in goals scored this season with 25. It is one of four categories in which he leads the nation, as he also ranks No. 1 in total points, goals per game and shots on goal per game.
Garrido's hat trick and two multigoal matches this week brought his season totals in those categories to four and seven, respectively.
With the national athlete of the week nod, Garrido becomes the seventh Milligan athlete to win a weekly recognition in the last five years.
Garrido and the Buffs will be in action next at Bryan College in the quarterfinals of the AAC tournament, set for Saturday, Nov. 2, at 7 p.m. in Dayton, Tennessee.
