GREENEVILLE, Tenn. (Sept. 4, 2019) – Roberto Fernandez Garrido scored twice in the first half and the Milligan College men's soccer team had an early lead, but in the end the Buffaloes suffered their first loss of the season, losing to Tusculum University 3-2 Wednesday night on the road.
Like Milligan's 9-0 season-opening win over Midway earlier this week, the Buffs were quick to strike first against Tusculum. Garrido put the Buffs on top 1-0 with a goal less than 10 minutes into the match, breaking through the Pioneers' back line, beating the goalkeeper and scoring on an open net.
Tusculum answered with two goals over the next 11 minutes before Garrido tied the game at 2-2 with a goal from a set piece. Joel Dominguez earned the assist as his free kick from the left side found Garrido open inside the box, and Garrido headed it home to make it 2-2 before entering the halftime break.
Tusculum answered again, this time early in the second half with a goal in the 50th minute. This one proved to be the deciding goal.
Milligan (1-1) was outshot by Tusculum (13-7-1 in 2018) 17-10, including 12-6 on shots on goal. Garrido and Dominguez led Milligan in the shot-taking category with four apiece, including three and two on goal, respectively.
Up next, Milligan heads to Dalton State Saturday for another nonconference match. Kickoff is scheduled for 3 p.m. The Buffs return home next Tuesday, Sept. 10, for a 5 p.m. showdown with Cumberland University.
