1994 HALL OF FAME INDUCTEE | DENNIS GREENWELL
Dennis Greenwell of Johnson City has been named to the Milligan College Athletics Hall of Fame. The Athletics Hall of Fame exists to honor outstanding athletes, coaches and other significant participants in the athletics program of Milligan College.
A native of Jonesborough, Greenwell graduated from Milligan in 1957. As a member of the Milligan men's basketball team, Greenwell was named to the Smoky Mountain All-Star basketball team and made the VSAC All-Star team. He was the team's high scorer his junior year and was co-captain for the 1956-57 Buffaloes his senior year.
Following graduation, Greenwell was assistant football coach and head basketball coach at Cloudland High School in Roan Mountain until 1966. He had a 121-126 win-loss record in basketball during his nine-year coaching period at Cloudland. In 1964, Greenwell led Cloudland to its first ever Watauga Conference Championship with a 30-4 season record. A year later, Greenwell led Cloudland to the state playoffs in 1966.
Greenwell moved on to teach and coach at Science Hill High School in Johnson City. In 1978, he was honored as Big Seven Coach of the Year in baseball after a successful season.
From 1980-1984, Greenwell served as head basketball coach at Science Hill. During his reign, he led the 1981-82 team to the Big Ten Championship, District Championship, Regional Championship and the Sub-State Championship. He was honored as the Big Ten Coach of the Year.
Greenwell continued to teach at Science Hill until his retirement. On May 22, 1994, Greenwell passed away. He is survived by his wife, Lois, a 1958 alumna of Milligan, and three children, Brian, Brenda and Kevin.
