MILLIGAN COLLEGE, Tenn. (Sept. 10, 2019) – Milligan College has been recognized again this year by the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics as a winner of the NAIA Champions of Character Five-Star Institution Silver Award for the 2018-19 athletic year. This is the third year in a row that Milligan has either been awarded silver or gold honors.
One hundred eighty NAIA Institutions earned the Champions of Character Five-Star Institution Award. All 15 members from last season of the Appalachian Athletic Conference received recognition for the 2018-19 athletic year with four teams receiving bronze, six receiving silver, and five gold. The AAC also received the Champions of Character Five-Star Conference award.
"Congratulations to our student-athletes and coaches for exhibiting the kind of sportsmanship and character that have resulted in Milligan once again being recognized by the NAIA as a Champions of Character Five Star Institution," said Milligan College President Dr. Bill Greer. "I'm proud of both the athletic and the academic accomplishments of our students and very pleased that their performance has led to this honor."
Throughout the 2018-19 school year the Buffs demonstrated what it meant to be a champion of character by their volunteer efforts among the community and in the world. The biggest volunteer event that the athletic department participated in was the Boones Creek Christian Church third annual community food pack that helped send over 100,000 meals to Haiti. Teams also volunteered at local elementary schools and honored Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. by participating in trash cleanups throughout the community.
The Champions of Character Five-Star award is given to institutions which demonstrate a commitment to Champions of Character. Institutions within the NAIA earn points in character training, recognition and promotion, as well as conduct in competition and academic focus. Also, points are earned based on exceptional student-athlete grade-point averages and by obtaining zero ejections during competition throughout the course of the academic year.
